This is the new version of the BIGSURF Netguide publication.
BIGSURF Netguide is a comprehensive listing of important and
interesting sites found on the Internet and is tailored to
the Macintosh community. This new version is, in a sense, a
"virtual web site" delivered right to your home computer
and can easily be used with any web browser. BIGSURF Netguide
is very easy to use and we thank all our supporters of this
independent publishing effort. For information regarding
publishing BIGSURF Netguide on CD-ROM or re-distribution
please see the appropriate sections and "readme" file
included within the BIGSURF Netguide. My humble thanks
(once again) to all at the info-mac archives for your
support and effort to maintain the best that the Mac
community of independent developers has to offer.

Other useful features are Tag and Drop (i.e. copy and paste by mouseclick)
an application-switcher, a clipboard-editor, a programmers-interface.

Subject: [*] CPCopland; a developer tool, mostly
CPCopland is a very small, simple hack: It fools the
System into treating files with a type of 'APPC' as files
of type 'APPL'. In other words, the System believes 'APPC'
files are really applications.
What's the point? Control Panels in Copland will be full-
fledged applications. Therefore:
1. It would be a Good Thing to unified control panel
standard for Copland and System 7.
2. Developers need to test Copland-destined Control Panels,
and they can't do that until they actually posess Copland.

Subject: [*] Folder Icon Maker 1.5
Folder Icon Maker creates folders with custom icons. If you haven't already
plastered your folders with icons from another program, or even if you have,
Folder Icon Maker creates attractive folders from almost any file.
To use Folder Icon Maker, just drag an application, document, folder, or disk
onto the FIM application. A new folder will be created in the same directory
as the original item is in.
Requires System 7. Some features require System 7.5.
New in version 1.5: Finder icons and pictures can be dragged or pasted in
as the folder image; folder and badge position can be
easily adjusted; folder image and folder and badge
position can be saved into custom folder resource files;
custom folder resource files can be double-clicked;
faster than previous versions.
Software and documentation Copyright 1991, 1992, 1995 Gregory M. Robbins
Unmodified copies of Folder Icon Maker may be distributed at no charge.
Folder Icon Maker is postcard-ware.

Subject: [*] Grant's CGI Framework (C source) 1.0b10
Grant's CGI Framework is a framework for writing 68K & PPC Macintosh
CGI applications in C. The user of the framework only needs to modify
one function (located in its own file) to produce a custom CGI - all
the other details are handled by the framework. Macintosh programming
experience is not required (although it helps) - but at least a basic
knowledge of the ANSI C language will be neccessary.
Features:
* 68K and PowerPC native support
* Multi-Threaded (thread support requires Apple's Thread Manager)
* Automatic html form parsing with easy function access to
individual fields
* Supports Asynchronus CGI (ACGI)
* Supports ListSTAR trigger and action events
* AppleScriptable for testing without a server or MacTCP
* Single function entry point for easy customization
* Can optionally compile as faceless background-only application
* Numerous configuration options for optimizing to your specific needs
* Option for self-quitting after specified idle time
* Significant performance increase over scripts such as those in
AppleScript and Perl
* CodeWarrior project files
* If you use it to write free applications, it's free to use

Subject: [*] Halloween Decor (Seasonal Desktop Pictures)
Halloween D#cor is seven free pictures intended to be used as desktop
patterns, with a difference. The difference is that the pictures work
as patterns only when used with a program such as Fran#ois Pottier's
shareware application, D#cor 2.7. or later (2.7.1 for newest Macs).
D#cor displays any picture on your desktop and will "tile" pictures
that are smaller than your screen. So you can have patterns larger
and better than standard ones.
The Halloween D#cor pattern pictures look good only when your monitor
is set to "thousands" of colors. The pattern pictures are in a 3-D
style and include: pumpkins & bats, glaring cats, spirits, skulls &
reapers, spiders & webs, witches & moons, and fall leaves. Made with
Specular TextureScape.
Don't forget to download D=E9cor, too.

This is the Italian version of Sword Dream, the modular role playing game
for the Macintosh which is also available in English and French.
Sword Dream is a commercial product in Italy, while it is shareware in the
rest of the world. So, the enclosed appication is only a demo for the full
product. This demo will automatically close after 10 minutes of game play.
Moreover, it will save games in progress, but it won't load saved games.
Still, games saved with this demo can be loaded using the complete version
(either commercial Italian or English shareware).
The demo is based on v1.6.2 of Sword Dream.

Subject: [*] Japanese WordMaster v3.1 demo
Greetings!
This file contains the new Japanese WordMaster v3.1 demo, a Japanese
study aid which offers two highly integrated functions in one package: a
multimedia vocabulary and Kanji study system, and a powerful 100,000+ word
Japanese-English Kanji dictionary.
It is designed to run on any Macintosh with System 6.0.7 or higher, and is
suitable for students from upper-level elementary to University level and
beyond. It uses color extensively, but will operate on any B/W system (such
as the Mac Classic). It is fully compatible to the new Power Macs.
It is also a complete dictionary authoring tool, which operates *without*
KanjiTalk or the Japanese Language Kit. You can create your own custom
dictionaries and add full color pictures, sound effects (such as
pronunciation) and notes to word entries. Dictionaries may be customised to
any course content and structure, allowing JWM to augment any type of
existing Japanese language course text with multimedia CAL.
Version 3.1 offers a number of new features and enhancements:
- various word search filters added
- paste Kana/Kanji from Japanese text editors
- partial customisation to various European languages
- Kanji info available by clicking Kanji on exercise dialog
- shift-click output list to change status (when file open)
- Year, Lesson, and Group number range extended to 9999
- Kanji flashcard exercise sequence improved
- window positions saved between launches
- additional control keys have been added
- resizable and movable output windows
- word search by any entered Kanji
- a structured vocabulary course
- even better student-friendly prices
We hope you enjoy using this great new version...

Subject: [*] Jeremy's CS Modules 1.5.1
Keywords: POWERBOOK PORTABLE CLOCK CONTROL STRIP SLEEP SOUND VOLUME
Jeremy's Control Strip Modules 1.5.1 (by Jeremy Kezer)
Jeremy's Control Strip Modules is a package of Control Strip Modules,
designed to work with Apple's Control Strip software. The modules are:
* Jeremy's CPU speed CSM - Displays current clock speed in MHz, or
indicates relative full/reduced clock speed with tortoise/hare icons. You
can also select the clock speed after you restart.
* Jeremy's Battery CSM - Replaces Apple's Battery Monitor module, but
displays more battery information in a smaller area! Also displays hard
drive status, modem status and remaining battery time.
* Jeremy's Clock CSM - Displays the current time. Via a popup menu, you
can customize the appearance of the display.
* Jeremy's Sound Volume CSM - A direct replacement for the Sound Volume
module provided by Apple. The icon shows the current volume setting in
both numeric and pictoral form, so you don't need to bring up the menu to
determine the current volume.
* Jeremy's Sleep CSM - A direct replacement for the Sleep Now module
provided by Apple. Via the popup menu, you can select whether or not to
bypass the dialog that appears when AppleTalk is active.
* Jeremy's Battery Time CSM - Displays Apple's remaining battery time on
PowerBooks that are capable of it. It can also "learn" the battery life on
any model of PowerBook, or display the elapsed battery time.
* Jeremy's Temperature CSM - Displays the internal temperature of a
PowerBook Duo or PowerBook 500 series.
* Jeremy's Application CSM - Displays a count of currently running
applications and DA's. Also has popup menu that lets you select foreground
application.
* Jeremy's AppleTalk CSM - Lets you toggle on and off AppleTalk. Presents
more information than Apple's AppleTalk module.
Release 1.5.1 adds several enhancements to the Battery CSM.
Shareware; $10 registration fee suggested. See enclosed documents for more
information.

(A copy of this message has also been posted to the following newsgroups:
comp.sys.mac.apps, duke.systems.macintosh)
Hm. I can't really think of what could be causing this problem, so
thought I'd pose it to y'all.
Setup: Q700 20/400
I just re-formatted the drive into two partitions with FWB's HDT Primer
1.7, from the Personal Edition. I password protected one partition and
all seemed to go well with format, etc. Took out the 7.5 floppies, and
ran a custom install of 7.5 on the machine. At disk 6 or 7 (forget which
the first time) it asked for Disk 1. I inserted, and the installation
came to a halt with an error message like: "An error occurred during
installation, the disk has not been touched" or something similar. I
think some of you MUST have seen this before... :) This is an install
onto a BLANK 200 MB partition, and I booted off of the Install 1 disk. I
thought perhaps the disks were corrupt somewhere, or that the custom
install did something wrong. I tried again, first just doing a easy
install. No luck.
Ok, maybe the disks are corrupt. Got my CD out, and made fresh disks out
of the images on the CD upgrade. Ran it through, and it died again, this
time for sure at disk 6, right after 'rebuilding the correct desktop
pattern'. Tested the partition I wanted to install on with Disk First
Aid. Still no sign of trouble.
Cannot think what would cause this weirdness??
I am going to try zapping the PRAM and see if that helps. There is NO
desktop file to speak of, since it's a empty disk.
Any help is gratefully taken, and thanked for, in advance.

Try MacShell [Archived as /info-mac/gui/mac-shell-053b.hqx; 105K].
It is a (partial) UNIX c-shell for the Mac. The file list that you want
can be easily generated by the "ls" command. You can also do neat things
like map your subdirectory (folder) structure, list files by creator and
type, and show the sizes of the data and resource forks. MacShell was
written by Fred Videon.

I have the same problem with Word 5.1. It's not an extension problem
because the same problem exists with the extensions off. As near as I can
tell, it's a System 7.5 problem. I started experiencing it right after I
upgraded from 7.1 to 7.5. I'm surprized he sees this same problem running
7.1.
I didn't know that opening the trash worked to clear it up. I have found
that just starting and quitting *any* application will solve this problem,
and Word 5.1 will start without the error message. As you alluded to,
this is a small compared to the headaches of Word 6! I'll stick with this
minor inconvience and Word 5.1 any day!

We have a couple-of-year old Apple 20" color display which has gone on the
blink and I'm wondering if anyone out there has seen similar symptoms:
when cold starting the Mac (Quadra 950) the monitor's green power on LED
comes on for a second or so then dims to off. For the past couple of
months, repeating this cold start procedure would eventually get the
monitor to 'catch' and come on. Now it won't.
The Mac operates just fine with an Apple 15"display. The shop wants to
start ordering cables, power boards, .... I thought someone might have a
hint as to where to start or might tell me which dumb thing I am doing
wrong.

Ed,
ARA DOES pass TCP/IP. I used an SE/30 as an ARA server / Internet gateway

MacTCP needs to be set up on your host ARA machine the same as if it were on

One tip that I have received is to use a disk utility to make the
Appleshare PDS file visible on the hard drive, then trash it. On re-boot,
the Mac will create a new file, and you can then empty the trash. I can't
say that this has worked for me, but that's because some &$%&^%&^%^&%!!!
hit the power off button on the Performa 6115 that I'm taking care of just
as the machine was writing to disk. One directory was hosed and I am
re-formatting the entire hard drive as I write this. Hope this helps.

This sounds more like a SCSI termination problem than anything else. It
certainly isn't the drive spinning up. Have you added any other external
SCSI devices? Try changing them around, adding and taking away termination
etc. Check there are no conflicting SCSI IDs. On the whole, I find it
better to keep the system on the internal drive (ID=0) which is where your
Mac will look first. This also means that you can remove the external drive
and still use your computer.
Also, (as another thought), try taking out all of your fonts. One may be
corrupted and causing the computer to hang while it is trying to read it.
Cheers
Ari

Just a note to the above: fonts load AFTER the parade of icons finishes.
Another possibility: you are not shutting down the Mac properly. This can
cause a long time to elapse before extensions begin to load.

All,
A request: When people are uploading stuff to the archives, would you
_please_ indicate in the blurb what kind of machine the software requires
to run on.
Specifically - does it run in B&W, will it fit on an older PowerBook screen
- 640x400, and whatever other specs. you think necessary to mention. And
they are necessary! Just because you designed your wicked
FAQ/newsletter/whatever in a stand-alone application that looks great on
your 14" 24-bit machine, doesn't mean you can't tell people this before
they spend considerable time downloading it. To take but one example...
The posting guidelines ask binary posters to be concise, but...
Moderators: could a point about machine specs. be added to remind posters?
Thanks,

I think the Drag & Drop Utility List Files should do what you want. It
will create a report of all of the files in a folder. Great utility.

Subject: PopupFolder X CP-TrashBack Conflict
I recently upgraded PopupFolder from version 1.5 to version 2.0, and
immediately encountered assorted problems, ranging from PF itself
stopping to work, to the whole Mac freezing up with "F-line trouble".
Typical "trigger events" were attempts to open the PF control panel or
using the PF Menu.
With the help of Conflict Catcher 3, I traced the problem to a conflict
between PF-2.0 and the TrashBack extension of MacTools 3.0. The
conflict did not occur with PF-1.5, and I do not know whether it exists
with more recent versions of MacTools, but I thought it might be useful
to some people to post this observation.

Subject: WIN95 & DOS Compatibility Card
It's been a 10-day (lost) battle to instal WIN95 English (upgrade from WIN
3.1) using thirteen 3.5in. disks in a Power Mac 6100/60 fitted with Apple's
MS-DOS Compatibility Card.
Day 1 - Not enough hard disk space, 56MB needed for full installation. New
Hard Disks (emulated) created. Must run SCANDISK.EXE as Windows installer
says there is a faulty drive. Drives checked.
Instal started, at 9% Disk 2 inserted, nothing happens. On examination Disk
2 turns out to be "Untitled" and empty! Microsoft Support (Sweden) talk
about virus, disk 2 is not protected as it includes registration form. Got
promise of new disk 2 by evening post.
Day 2 Nothing in post. New reminder to MS
Day 5 Still nothing in post. Another reminder. MSS says they're undermanned
Day 12 Still no disk. New reminder, and promise of posting that evening
Day 13 Post arrives with, believe it or not, new Disk 3. Frantic calls to
MSS - someone packed the wrong one! Disk 2 was there in stock. Pulled
strings for courier delivery. Received it. Wonderful, But alas no. When new
Disk 2 inserted, installer said "Setup Wizard has discovered a corrupt
(.CAB) file. Cannot continue".
More calls to MSS. Get info that of the 13 install disks, only Disk 1 is
1.44MB, the other are 1.6MB DMF-and this is not readable by Apple
SuperDrive! MS Support Chief says it's Apple's responsibility not
Microsoft's to fix it. Talk to Apple Support. And hear for the first time
ever, that WIN 95 must be installed from a CD for Mac+DOS card.
But CD upgrade to WIN95 English not yet in Sweden. Bought a copy from
Dixons at Gatwick Airport on Day 20!!!
Talk about waste of time, and lack of facts. Hope this story helps others
